Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy in Vancouver
you're starting to understand your brain differently. Now what?
Maybe you were diagnosed with ADHD or autism as an adult, or you've started wondering whether neurodivergence explains things you've struggled with for years. There can be relief in finally having an explanation, but it can also bring up a lot of questions about who you are, what you've been pushing yourself through, and what you actually need.
You may find yourself looking back at your life through a completely different lens.
what this can look like
You might:
❊ Look back at school, work, relationships, or burnout and wonder how no one noticed how hard you were working to keep up
❊ Feel relieved to understand yourself better while also grieving how long you spent thinking you were lazy, difficult, too sensitive, or just bad at being an adult
❊ Realize you've become very good at hiding when you're overwhelmed, confused, overstimulated, or struggling
❊ Know what you're supposed to do but have trouble getting yourself to start, switch tasks, make decisions, or follow through
❊ Need more rest, quiet, structure, or recovery time than you think you "should" and feel guilty about it
❊ Question which parts of you are actually you and which developed from years of trying to fit in
❊ Wonder what it would mean to build a life around how your brain works instead of always trying to make yourself work differently
You don't need a formal diagnosis to explore neurodivergence in therapy. You also don't need to arrive knowing whether ADHD, autism, or another label fits.
how we'll work together
-
Neurodivergent-affirming therapy isn't about helping you become better at looking neurotypical. We can look at what's hard without assuming that everything needs to be fixed.
Together, we'll get curious about how your brain works, where you're using the most energy, and which expectations actually make sense for you. We might look at masking, sensory needs, executive functioning, burnout, relationships, or the ways you've learned to judge yourself for things that have always taken more effort.
-
If you're coming to therapy after a late diagnosis or realization, we'll also make room for what that brings up. You may feel relieved, angry, sad, validated, confused, or all of those things at different times. Looking back with new information can change how you understand your childhood, relationships, work history, and even your sense of who you are.
-
The aim isn't to explain everything about you through neurodivergence. It's to understand yourself with more context, so you can make choices that fit who you are rather than spending so much energy trying to become someone you're not.
what you may gain from this work
Clients exploring neurodivergence may develop:
❊ A clearer understanding of how their brain works and what helps them function well
❊ More awareness of sensory, emotional, social, and executive functioning needs
❊ Less shame about things that have historically felt harder for them
❊ More ability to notice masking and decide when it feels safe or useful to drop it
❊ A stronger sense of identity beyond productivity, achievement, or other people's expectations
❊ More confidence making choices that work for their actual needs rather than what they think they should need
You don't have to become a different version of yourself to make life work better. Sometimes the work is understanding the person who's been there all along.
